As of the end of 2006, the Hubertus Scheibe Memorial Scholarship Fund has approximately $65,000. The goal of the DAAD Alumni Association (DAADAA) has always been to bring the Scheibe fund up to a level where the interest will sustain a base level of annual scholarships.
Traditionally the Alumni Association funds three to four scholarships each summer and review an additional three to five grant requests. Additionally the just received an anonymous annual grant for approximately $2,000 for scholarship earmarked for a student in the visual arts. The Alumni Association has also just begun to receive matching grants from certain companies and hopes to expand this in 2007. In broad terms, the budget for scholarships in Germany runs just under $10,000 per year.
Generally, the Scheibe Fund receives its annual revenue from the DAADAA's annual solicitation letter sent out during the summer and from any net proceeds from the annual Sound Understanding Concert held each spring.
The DAADAA works hard to keep the administrative costs low; everyone is a volunteer, there is part time help via the New York DAAD office. Support for DAADAA activities (newsletters, regional meetings, mailings, etc) come from the membership dues and they strive to make sure that a percentage is still left over to add to the Scheibe Fund.
The Alumni Association would gratefully welcome any donation of any size to the Scheibe Memorial Fund.
If you have any questions, please contact DAADAA President Laura Bueerman (alumniassociation@daad.org).
