The Cost and Risk of Nuclear Renaissance in Europe and the US - Washington, DC, March 31, 2008 |
The revived interest in nuclear energy on both sides of the Atlantic inspired a contentious debate held at the latest DAAD Alumni event on March 31st in Georgetown University, Washington, DC. “The Cost and Risk of Nuclear Renaissance in Europe and the US” brought the advocates of and opponents to nuclear energy as the most optimal future electricity source to discuss four major topics: nuclear safety, including the risk of a terrorist attack, radioactive waste, market competitiveness of nuclear energy without government subsidies, and the prospect of nuclear proliferation. The debate, conducted by Steve Fetter, a nuclear energy expert and the Dean of the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, evolved around the question whether the benefits of nuclear energy outweigh the risks and costs it presents.
The proponents of nuclear – Christopher Guith from the US Department of Energy and Alan Hanson, the Executive Vice-President of the nuclear energy producing company AREVA NC, Inc, – argued that nuclear energy provides the cheapest and cleanest electricity source and that current US nuclear infrastructure diminishes the risk of nuclear accident. The opponents of the nuclear renaissance – Arne Jungjohann from the Heinrich Boell Foundation and David Lochbaum from the Union of Concerned Scientists – claimed that the costs and risks of nuclear overshadow its benefits. The threat of nuclear accidents, radioactive waste, the lack of investment in the nuclear sector, and nuclear proliferation of nuclear weapons make nuclear industry too costly, politically and financially, as the primary electricity production technology. The speakers agreed that demand-oriented energy policy and the diversification of energy sources is what will shape the successful future energy policy.
The debate was co-sponsored by the BMW Center for German and European Studies of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, the Heinrich Boell Foundation, and DAAD.

DAAD-HBF Conference on Climate Cooperation - San Francisco, November 16, 2007 |
On the Road to Bali:
Strengthening Transatlantic Climate Cooperation
Friday, November 16, 2007
2:00-6:00pm, followed by reception
Mission Bay Conference Center, Robertson Auditorium
1675 Owens St., San Francisco, CA 94158
DAAD and the Heinrich Boell Foundation organized this transatlantic event on climate change in San Francisco, California. Experts from both sides of the Atlantic debated the domestic energy and climate action and exchanged experiences on which policy measures seem to be most successful for curbing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting renewable energies. Germany’s feed-in tariff system for renewable energies is seen as a role model, and several U.S. states are preparing to introduce similar legislation. More than 40 US states have introduced climate targets, climate legislation, or have formed climate commissions. Around 25 states plan to participate in regional emission trading schemes starting 2009. Overall, it became clear that in the past few years the state and local levels have been the focus of ambitious climate and energy policies in the US. Since expectations for passing climate legislation in the current US administration are extremely low, the speakers suggested that transatlantic cooperation should take place more intensively with states and cities in the US.

Pan-American DAAD Alumni Conference in Brazil June 7-10, 2007 |
From June 7-10 DAAD held its first ever pan-American alumni conference in São Paulo, Brazil. Nearly 100 former DAAD scholarship holders from the USA, Canada, Central and South America with academic involvement and backgrounds in many different fields were joined by regional DAAD directors and staff at the event. The focus of the conference was on understanding academic careers in the world today, highlighting international mobility and the formation of academic networks and partnerships.
The president of the DAAD, Prof. Theodor Berchem, also took part in the conference as a speaker and participating actively in many of of the discussions and debates. In addition to presentations and break-out discussion groups, the conference provided DAAD alumni with the opportunity to present their own academic research and professional activities and the chance to spark new academic networks.
Thanks to all the DAAD Alumni from North and South America who helped to make this event a success!
